Really? REALLY?!

$11,000. Really?!

Would any of you ever pay that much for a ukulele. What is the most you would pay?
What if you won millions of dollars on the lottery. What is the most you would pay?

Most AWKWARD interview ever

Here is a video of Stephin Merrit being interviewed by an over happy morning news guy. It's delightfully cringeworthy.

He starts playing "Smile" at the 2:09 mark.

The King of Carrot Flowers

According to Spin Magazine the best album of the 1990s was In the Aeroplane Over the Sea by Neutral Milk Hotel.

What could make the best album of a whole decade even better?

Hearing the whole album played live on a ukulele!

Monday August 16th at the Grog Shop in Cleveland Heights!

Neutral Uke Hotel’s mission statement is simple: to unite obsessed fans of Neutral Milk Hotel for a live performance of their critically acclaimed “In the Aeroplane Over the Sea” album, played in its entirety on ukulele by Shawn Fogel, with accompaniment from members of Golden Bloom and The Motion Sick.

And now for something just a bit different.

How cool would it be to play PJ Harvey's Man-Size on the ukulele?

I could not find the right chords do it so I dropped a line to my musician pal and fellow PJ Harvey fan, Tom Zav and he replied with this:

There are basically two riffs, first is
G -> Bflat -> Am and then the second is G -> F -> Bflat
now try to figure out the counts. You can follow it until you get to the 'Got my girl.." they they do something really off, adding a beat inbetween the G and F. These counts are insane. I'm amazed at how this is written.

try counting like this
G
1-2 3-4 1-2 3-4
Bflat
1-2 3-4
Am
123

Ya know what? It works! Give it a try.

Chordie love

I know a lot of folks don't so much like this site, but I sure do.

Especially because you can adjust songs up and down a semitone to get rid of those pesky E chords.

Here is my songbook.

Sunshine & Ukuleles

It's going to be a very warm weekend here in Cleveland. Lots of sunshine which made me think of the song by the Great Lake Swimmers called "Imaginary Bars."

Here is a live video version of the song performed solo by the lead singer of the band.

The first line of the song is:
"When the sun fell down and fell asleep, drunk from drinking all the heat"

So perfect for the end of a hot humid day. Here are the lyrics and chords for the song.

I think it's a pretty easy song to play on the ukulele. Only 3 chords. Give it a go!

Ya missed it!

Last night was the monthly Cleveland Jumping Flea meetup .

About a dozen people showed up with about a dozen different kinds of ukuleles!

A few folks brought along some new music to add to our ever expanding song book and Sam brought a great strum chart to help all of us get the feel of some new “up downs.”

Sad you missed out on all of this?! Well we meet again at 7:30pm on Tuesday, June 29th. We’ll see ya then!

In case you were wondering why..

The ukulele is commonly associated with music from Hawai‘i where the name roughly translates as "jumping flea",[3] due to the action of one's fingers playing the ukulele resembling a "jumping flea". According to Queen Lili'uokalani, the last Hawaiian monarch, the name means “the gift that came here”, from the Hawaiian words uku (gift or reward) and lele (to come).
